Summary:
The Senior Manager, Coding Support is responsible for developing, operationalizing, and monitoring a centralized coding support team and its processes in support of the hospital's Health System (including affiliates) inpatient and outpatient coding teams leading to the compliant, and timely coding of patient encounters for use in claim submission, and regulatory, quality, and population health reporting to support the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
This leader, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Coding, manages the planning and operational direction of coding support for the system. This leader, in collaboration with direct-report managers, is responsible for the coordination and administration of vendor management, DNFC follow-up, KPI reporting and dashboards, application maintenance, and workflow optimization functions for the HIM Coding team ensuring organizational performance is in alignment with the short term and long-term coding goals of the hospital's health system.
Provides overall management and oversight of coding support functions.
Provides management and oversight of the development of standardized policies, procedures, and practices related to coding support across all Regions.
Manages and provides oversight of coding support managers.
Designs and delivers methods to measure and communicate KPIs and other metrics for the HIM/Coding function to include routine reporting, ad hoc reporting, and dashboards.
Designs and delivers methods to follow-up, expedite, and escalate account level issues preventing coding from being completed.
Ensures that coding software applications are functioning properly and is responsible for coordinating updates, upgrades, downtimes, and troubleshooting.
Designs and delivers workflow optimizations to increase the accuracy and/or productivity of the coding teams.
Manages and provides oversight of all outsource coding vendors to include vetting, contracting, resource procurement, and communication.
Leads projects which include financial and quality analysis, problem solving, and team collaboration.
Communicates ideas or positions in a persuasive manner that builds support, agreement, or commitment.
Establishes strong relationships with external stakeholders such as Risk/Integrity/Compliance, Quality, Providers, Revenue Integrity, Payer-yield, Information Services, and other departments within the organization.
Required qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree/AHIMA accredited HIM program or other healthcare related field of study or equivalent education/experience
Registered Health Information Administrator or Registered Health Information Technician
3 years' experience in management/supervisory role in overseeing coding teams in an acute care environment.
10 or more years' experience in coding operations, support, reporting, application management in the acute hospital setting.
I regularly conduct code reviews and provide feedback to ensure adherence to coding standards.
We, the coding managers, train and supervise coding staff to make sure the hospital or medical facility obtains adequate reimbursement and adheres to applicable regulations and guidelines. We report to the top management and manage subordinate staff to supervise their day-to-day job performance. We follow up on unpaid claims within standardized billing cycle timeframe.
