Overview: This position will be within the Human Factors and System Management team, which supports the Habitability and Human Factors Branch at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. This position is for support of the International Space Station (ISS) Program Flight Crew Integration (FCI) system. FCI activities include providing human engineering/human factors inputs and specific hardware and label design suggestions to space hardware development teams to ensure effective user interfaces for astronauts and ground controllers and assessing compliance to NASA human engineering requirements. The candidate may also support other programs such as Orion, Commercial Crew, Gateway, and EVA. Exploration activities consist of providing support to the design and development of the human-to-system interfaces, including requirements interpretation and verification planning, task analysis, human error analysis, and iterative crew evaluations. This position is to serve as the FCI contractor lead, overseeing the work of the Human Factors Implementation Team as well as managing the budget for the Operations Habitability Team, both reporting to the NASA FCI System Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical analyses and conduct hardware evaluations throughout hardware design life cycle to verify International Space Station (ISS) human engineering and habitability requirements.
  • Attend design reviews of ISS hardware and provide design guidance to ensure compliance with human factors requirements while placing an emphasis on optimizing crew operations and habitability aboard ISS.
  • Work directly with hardware providers to develop labels and label plans for hardware, including operations nomenclature, that meet actual and the intent of requirements to aide in operations.
  • Understand microgravity issues and constraints on hardware performance to aide in making effective design inputs.
  • Provide Certification of Compliance (CoC) memos to provide evidence to the ISS Program that hardware meets requirements.
  • Provide continuous improvement to team processes and NASA requirements.
  • Be charged with authority and responsibility to waive requirements if intent is met or force hardware changes to ensure safe and usable ISS hardware is flown.
  • Lead duties include: fiscal year planning, monthly budget analysis and forecasting, weekly reporting, team oversight, customer communications, and maintaining calibration and quality records.
Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Candidate must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree with 10 years of related experience, or a Master's degree with 8 years, in a human-system related field (human factors, biomedical engineering, or closely-related technical discipline). Experience with requirements development and verification is required.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated leadership capabilities and be very detail-oriented, with excellent organizational and planning skills. The qualified applicant must also have excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective communication between external groups as well as report writing. The candidate must be able to handle a variety of work expectations, be a ‘go-getter’ and be able to work independently after initial training as well as collaboratively.

DESIRED:

  • Prior experience with NASA, ISS, Orion, or related work is very highly desired
  • Knowledge of space vehicles, ergonomics, systems integration, and requirements verification is desired. Familiarity with NASA hardware requirements for either Systems or Payloads, or familiarity with industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1472, NASA-STD-3001) is also desired. Candidate should have the ability to effectively interact with customers at all levels. Knowledge of Access Database programming is a plus.
