Description

West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), a part of the WVU System of campuses located in Beckley, WV, is currently inviting applications for a Professional Technologist 1 for the WVU Beckley campus.

About the Opportunity

As a Professional Technologist (ProfTech) 1 position in the WVU Tech IT department, you will be responsible for helping with all the LCN College of Engineering software (50+ software programs) and hardware and the WVU Tech COBE college faculty/staff computers and computer/teaching classroom/labs, WVU Tech Testing Center, ID printer, collegiate eSports lab equipment, networking equipment and WVU Beckley Nursing computers and SIM labs.

You will be responsible for over 700 computers (hardware and software) and over 70 locations with Audio/Visual (AV) equipment (projectors, cameras, speakers).

You will be the primary IT support for any WVU Tech student IT-related question or problem that can't be resolved by the ITS Service Desk.

What you'll do:

  • Provide campus-wide deskside computer support. Resolve and/or coordinate the resolution of computer hardware problems including computers, printers, and other peripheral devices. Determine problem by using a variety of methods including diagnostic software, research, and/or testing, and makes repairs using small hand tools and electronic devices if appropriate. Determine if vendor maintenance is required and follows proper procedures to obtain parts to effect repair of hardware. Transport equipment to repair location if necessary. Perform preventive maintenance and hardware setup and configuration for employees throughout the campus. You will support over 700 computers on the WVU Beckley campus. We have over 350 computers in computer classrooms and meeting spaces and over 350 employee and multi-user computer systems that they will inventory when they arrive on campus, put the standard Tech image on using SCCM, migrate the data off of the old device to the new one, set up the new device, configure it for the new usage, recycle the old equipment, troubleshoot hardware issues, replace motherboards, power supplies, hard drives, upgrade software and operating systems, run diagnostic software for determining causes of issues and resolving the issues as needed.
  • Oversee and respond to all the Audio/Visual (AV) campus needs (classroom, auditoriums & meeting spaces). You will be responsible for the IT-related hardware in the 70+ classrooms and auditoriums on the WVU Beckley campus as it relates to the projectors, document cameras, instructor stations, web cameras, speakers, sound systems, and the connectivity to such. They will respond to the classroom emergency phone calls from faculty during the semester and rush to fix whatever technology issue they have that's preventing them from conducting their class. You will keep an inventory of all the projectors and bulbs and replace them as necessary and keep a spare for each type at all times. When there are events in the auditoriums, you will meet with the people to show them how the equipment works. Each summer you will test each location and repair any cabling or damaged equipment or ports.
  • This position involves a wide variety of technology systems because we have a very small staff that takes care of all the technology needs of the entire WVU Beckley campus. The areas include ID printer, classroom technology, database (IT asset inventory system), applications (Microsoft Office products like Word and Outlook etc., Zoom, GlobalProtect, Jabber, Adobe Products, etc.), telecommunications (VoIP telephone system troubleshooting, replacing phones and cables), networking (creating network cables, configure switch ports, running ethernet drops).
  • Follow policies, processes, procedures, and associated documentation in compliance with security standards, federal and university privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines relative to securing personal information (generated, stored, and/or transmitted electronically) maintained in supported. You will follow these government and WVU ITS security policies and standards and use them as guidelines while maintaining the WVU Beckley campus-supported computer systems.
  • Will be required to drive/operate a motor vehicle in order to perform job duties across campus. You will use the campus Jeep that we have to move equipment across campus, run to the local hardware store to get parts, run to Neville Street for emergency classroom technology and auditorium technology support, and use it when necessary, as needed to perform their job duties.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including How To documents for end users, interpretation of business rules, flow charts, logic diagrams, and code, according to industry documentation standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • BS in Computer Information Systems or other IT related degree OR five or more years of progressively responsible experience in current technology in higher education or a complex organization; or any equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience that provides the incumbent with the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the job.
  • Experience with SCCM for endpoint imaging\updating and computer equipment refresh
  • Dell business class laptop and desktop hardware knowledge and previous support
  • Panasonic projector and other audio-visual equipment knowledge and previous support
  • ID Printer equipment knowledge and previous support
  • Sound equipment knowledge and previous support
  • Cisco Network equipment knowledge (switch port configuration) and previous support
  • Networking knowledge (running cable, installing connectors/plugs and replacing jacks)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact at all organizational levels and with technical and non-technical staff, directors/managers, and end-users.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and justify the approach used, resolve complex issues, and explain technical features of an application or process.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate in challenging situations.
  • Strong analytical skills to be able to research, analyze, detect, and technically correct errors within in-house developed processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to reason logically and analyze and solve problems. Ability to define procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction from peers if directed for the purpose of a project

  • Broad knowledge of computer security issues, requirements, and trends, including an awareness of information security laws (such as GLBA, PII, HIPPA, and FERPA) and accepted industry practice.
  • In-depth knowledge of general office software including word-processing, database, and spreadsheet applications (prefer Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel).

  • At times this is a physically demanding job and requires over 10k steps per day, carrying over 50 lbs. and climbing/working from ladders and is critical to the success of the faculty and staff and students on the WVU Beckley campus.
