Job Summary
The Bowdoin Organic Garden has been an integral part of the College’s sustainability mission since 2005. In addition to growing vegetables, fruit and flowers for use in the dining halls, it also provides agricultural experiences and events for the college community. The Bowdoin Organic Garden presently comprises approximately an acre and a half of land divided between 2 on-campus locations. The Organic Garden has an active presence on campus and sponsors over 20 events and activities each year. Event highlights include: maple syrup boiling on the quad, al fresco summer dinners in the garden, garden produce sales, cider pressing, and winter wheat threshing at the new barn. The Organic Garden Supervisor visits Bowdoin classrooms, sit on panels, participates in environmental programs, and works closely with student organizations.
In addition, this position plans, organizes, prepares the fields, and grows produce on the vibrant half-acre organic garden for Bowdoin Dining Service. The Supervisor works closely with students in the organic garden club to plan & hold events related to the garden. Works with Dining Service management to recruit and oversee a paid summer assistant, students and volunteers; completes and submits documentation for organic certification and develops garden goals and plans.
Education/Skills Requirements
A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required; a 4-year college degree with coursework in environmental studies is strongly preferred. Applicants must possess demonstrated knowledge of organic gardening techniques; a passion for the environment and sustainability, and demonstrated ability and interest in demanding physical labor; strong communication skills; and a valid Driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy required.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Large-scale garden experience and working knowledge of organic gardening requirements and techniques are preferred. Experience with record keeping. Interest in working with students and teaching gardening skills. The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-placement physical, criminal history background check and motor vehicle record check.
Standard Work Days and Hours
Works 40 hours per week to accomplish goals. Must have schedule flexibility during growing season, to adjust hours based on weather and garden needs. Weekend and evening work may be required to cover garden-related special events.
