Description

Under general supervision, makes service repairs on one or more makes of automotive equipment, including coaches, tractors, and motorcycles used in the city service. Assists in performing the more difficult work involved in general auto repair and maintenance. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Repair, inspect, replace, or adjust the following units or equipment: spark plug wires, drive shafts, universal joints, springs and spring shackles, shock absorber links, brake and clutch pedal assemblies, brake cross shafts, brake slack adjustors, brake chambers, brake shields, brake cables, brake pads and shoes, and fly wheels.

  • Dismantle and assemble brake drums and hubs.

  • In a service garage, test and adjust brake systems.

  • Adjust and repair clutches, remove defective springs, clutches, brake shoes, universal joints, front and rear axles and other units and installs new or rebuilt ones.

  • Perform routine automotive inspections.

  • Assist a General Auto Mechanic in the more difficult repair work and in the installation of motor and chassis units on any type of automotive equipment including trucks, tractors, and motorcycles.

  • Perform any mechanical tasks associated with automotive repair, such as minor bumping, heating, drilling, bolting, welding, brazing, soldering or cutting.

  • Keep simple records.

  • Operate tow trucks to service, repair, and retrieve disabled vehicles in the field.

  • Shift and drives vehicles on department premises.

  • Dispense gasoline and oil.

  • Service batteries, battery cables and tires.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • Education equivalent to completion of two (2) years in a trade or vocational high school with courses in general shop and automotive repair.

  • One (1) year of experience in repairing automotive equipment in a general garage or automotive service stations.

  • Michigan Operator License required.

  • Persons subsequently hired in this title shall be required to obtain a State of Michigan Driver or Chauffeur License, with Group A Commercial Driver License endorsement and Airbrake qualification. (In addition, P endorsement required for placement in the Department of Transportation.)

  • Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988.

  • Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools commonly used in the performance of automotive repair work.

  • Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on requirements of the position.

Supplemental Information

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Graduation from a four (4) year trade or vocational high school with courses in general shop and automotive repair.

Evaluation Plan

  • Interview: 70%

  • Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications: 30%

  • Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%

Additional points may be awarded for:

  • Veteran Points: 0 – 15 points

  • Detroit Residency Credit: 15 points

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

  • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
