Deckhand

American Cruise Lines is the largest domestic cruise line with a growing fleet of riverboats and cruise ships that travel to the most amazing destinations across the United States. We are currently looking for Deckhands to join us for our 2024 season, with an anticipated training date starting Spring 2024.

Deckhands are entry-level marine crewmembers trusted with the opportunity to assist in vessel operations standing helm, gangway, and security watches. You are the front line of the American Cruise Lines brand responsible for delivering exceptional guest service.

As a Deckhand you will work onboard for a temporary 28-week period. Successful candidates possess the following traits: hardworking, natural leader, ambitious, goal-oriented, and a team player.

Responsibilities:
  • Handling lines, gangways, anchors, and marine equipment under the guidance of Captains and Mates.
  • Responsible for daily exterior cleaning, line handling, and logistic support tasks. Standing helm watches assisting the Captain and Mate in steering the vessel.
  • Standing gangway and deck watches including security, maintenance, and passenger assistance duties.
  • Loading and unloading guest luggage, ship stores, garbage, and daily logistics tasks.
  • Cleaning all exterior decks, verandas, windows, furniture, and marine spaces.
  • Washing, drying, and folding all ship laundry.
  • Maintain continual professional grooming and uniform appearance.
  • Continual availability to assist guests and crew.
  • Rotate through day-night watch and task schedules averaging 12-hrs daily.

Qualifications:

For shipboard employment, you must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and an American citizen or Green Card holder. You must be willing and able to work a minimum of 12 hours per day, for 7 days a week, for up to 28 weeks. Employees must able to meet moderate physical demands including lifting, bending, climbing, and extended periods of standing or walking.

Under Federal Law and the Department of Transportation, we are required to pre-employment drug test all shipboard employees which includes testing for Marijuana and other controlled substances. To provide safe and conscientious service to our guests, the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. All shipboard employees also have emergency and safety functions essential to the safe operation of the ship that are included in your training.

American Cruise Lines has grooming standards that include limitations on visible tattoos and piercings. This a temporary employment position not to extend beyond 28 weeks of shipboard work. About the Deckhand role

Water Transportation Deckhand

As Deckhands, we coordinate with other technicians to schedule multiple repair sessions and greasing for the company’s machinery to avoid malfunctions and breaks during their regular operation. We also use the company’s forklifts or cranes to move heavy objects around while ensuring that ropes are well attached and locked to the weight to avoid injuries in case they rupture. We also use multiple ropes, knots, and chains based on the product’s weight and distance in which it’ll be carried.
