Job Description

Position Summary:

The overall responsibilities of this Temporary/PT position are to develop and maintain cultures of red tropical seaweeds and work towards building a seaweed nursery to eventually replace material harvested from offshore seaweed farms. Research goals include helping to design and execute experiments aimed at increasing growth rates and survivorship of red tropical seaweed cultures. The position is available immediately for up to six months, and up to 20 hours/week.

Specific responsibilities related to these project goals:

  1. Maintenance of seaweed cultures and development of new nursery techniques
  2. Preparation of samples for analysis
  3. Data management and analysis, including preparing figures for progress reports
  4. Support of student research and visiting scientists in the lab
Additional Responsibilities:
  1. Help with husbandry of corals used in lab research
  2. Collect local corals via SCUBA for lab experiments
  3. Assist with preparation and lab/field activities for high school courses relating to the impact of current environmental stressors on coral reefs


Basic Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor of Science degree and may have a year -/+ of directly related experience. More extensive directly related experience may be substituted for formal education. Familiarity with seaweed culture and/or sterile culture techniques, experience with data management and statistical analysis, experience with Fiji/ImageJ, experience with PAM and/or other techniques for quantifying algal physiological processes, basic microscopy skills,

Preferred Qualifications:

AAUS scientific diving certification. Spanish language skills.

Physical Requirements:

Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals. Occasional lifting of heavy objects (<30 lbs).
