CLASS TITLE: School Library Assistant
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under supervision, performs a variety of responsible sub-professional library duties in a Chicago Public School library; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Receives and processes new books by typing and affixing appropriate categorical codes and card pockets, assists in shelving new books, types and files catalog cards, assists students with reference assignments, files pamphlets and periodical materials, sorts and places returned books to appropriate shelves, assists students in locating books and other publications, issues and charges books to students, types book orders, prepares inventory and circulation reports, inspects returned books for damage and repairs books as necessary, instructs student library helpers in work routines, responds to inquiries of a non-professional nature and refers students to school librarian for professional assistance; may operate personal computers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill. Good knowledge of general clerical office methods, procedures, and practices; some knowledge of library materials, methods, and procedures.
Ability to prepare and maintain routine records and reports, ability to work with and for school-aged children, ability to write legibly.
Skill in the application of general clerical procedures, skill in basic arithmetic and reading.
Physical Requirements. Light Work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently to move objects. Even though weight of force moved may be only a negligible amount, a position should be rated as Light Work (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing or pulling of arm controls.
I have worked as a library assistant for 2 years, assisting patrons with finding books and managing library resources.
As Library Assistants, we are responsible for the general supervision a professional library, providing information services to customers of all ages, including reference, programming outreach, and inter-library loan. We also recommend reading materials to customers with an emphasis on services to youth for the betterment of their present and future. Additionally, we assist in collection management by communicating and interpreting library policies and procedures to the public for organizational decorum. Along with that, we also perform other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of reading enthusiasts. We come with diverse skills and capabilities to help in various other tasks related to IT issues, report writing and troubleshoot problems.
