The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a public medical school which was established in 1879 with the help of eight physicians, led by P.O. Hooper of Little Rock. It is a subsidiary of the University of Arkansas System and consists of six colleges which includes the graduate school, seven institutes, several research centers, a statewide network of community education centers, and the UAMS Medical Center. The university is an academic health center and medical school which merges its education efforts with the patient care resources of a hospital and outpatient center and specialized care and research. UAMS is the supreme public employer in the state with more than 10,000 employees and had 3,021 students, which includes 694 medical students, 475 in the pharmacy college, 781 in the Nursing college, 662 in the Health Profession’s college, 180 in the public Health’s college and 229 in the Graduate School as of fall 2015.
