The Citizens of the North Slope Borough region set up the Home Rule Charter of the North Slope Borough of Alaska to establish an effective and economic government with just representation and to provide municipal government responsive to the will of the people and to the continuing needs of the communities. An election in 1972 established the North Slope Borough. It was the first time, with the use of local government, Native Americans had taken control of their destiny. It was, and continues to be, one of the most ambitious attempts that indigenous people have ever taken to reclaim control of their lives and futures.
