Montana is one of the 8 Mountain States, located in the northwestern part of the Western United States, and has a long history with various indigenous people. To the east, it shares a border with North Dakota and South Dakota. The Canadian provinces are to the south, Wyoming is to the west and southwest, and Idaho is to the west and southwest. It is the fourth-largest in USA after Alaska, Texas, and California; and the largest landlocked state, with an area of 147,040 square miles (380,800 km2). With a yearly average rainfall of 380 mm, it has a wide range of geography, elevation, and height, as well as climate. It is ranked 45th in terms of population (by the 2010 Census), but 19th in terms of native people, who make up 6.5 percent of the state's population, with at least two-thirds of them living in metropolitan areas.
