The United States Institute of Peace is a national institute founded by Congress in 1984 that was designed to take a non-partisan stance and to be independent. Its main objective is to promote peace and the idea of a non-violent society as being feasible and essential for the US and global security. Overseas, the institute works with natives to quell, prevent, and solve any violent conflict. USIP is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors, who operate from the institute’s headquarters in Washington. The entire workforce comprises over 300 employees, some of whom work in different parts of the world.
